Why is the device time and NIST time different on my tour reports?

You should check regularly to ensure that the NIST time and device time are matching for your tour reports. This can provide powerful litigation support as it ensures that your device time is set correctly. What good is a tour report, where each checkpoint is meticulously time stamped by your mobile device while conducting a property tour, if it can be argued that the times shown on the tour report could be unreliable?

When we created SOVA, we wanted to build in a simple way to prove that the device time showing on our tour reports was in fact reliable, and what better way then to compare device time to NIST? For those of you who don't know, NIST is an Internet time server that utilizes an atomic clock located in Boulder, Colorado. How accurate is NIST? It is understood that NIST neither gains nor loses one second in about 300 million years. Certainly accurate enough for our purposes!

Example above shows a portion of the tour report in SOVA, where the device time is in fact synchronized with NIST

Reset your device time

This is device and OS dependent, but here are the basic steps:

  1. Press the "Menu" button on the Android, then tap "Settings."
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the Settings menu, then tap "Date & Time."
  3. Tap the box next to "Automatic" to check it.
  4. Press the "Home" button to return to the Android's home screen. The time should now show the current time at your location. If it doesn't, ensure that you are connected to WiFi. If all else fails, open a ticket and we'll see if we can help.
