WiFi Connection Problems in Buildings with Multiple Networks

WiFi Connection Problems in Buildings with Multiple Networks

The Issue You Might Be Experiencing

If you're having trouble staying connected to WiFi in your building, particularly if your phone keeps disconnecting or switching between different WiFi networks, this might be caused by a privacy feature in Android 13.

What's Happening Behind the Scenes?

Your phone uses a unique identifier (like a digital fingerprint) to connect to WiFi networks. For privacy reasons, Android 13 creates a fake identifier for each WiFi network instead of using your phone's real one. While this helps protect your privacy, it can sometimes cause connection problems in buildings with multiple WiFi networks.

How to Fix This

Follow these steps to resolve connection issues:

  1. Open your phone's Settings
  2. Tap on "Network & Internet"
  3. Tap on "WiFi"
  4. Find your building's WiFi network in the list
  5. Tap and hold on the network name
  6. Select "Modify Network" or "Network Details"
  7. Look for "Privacy" or "Device MAC"
  8. Change the setting from "Use randomized MAC" to "Use device MAC"

Your phone should now connect more reliably to the building's WiFi.

Important Note About Future Changes

If you later need to remove and re-add this WiFi network:

  • When you "forget" the network and reconnect to it
  • Android will switch back to using a randomized MAC address
  • You'll need to repeat the steps above if connection problems return

Still Having Issues?

If you continue to experience WiFi problems after following these steps, please contact building support for additional assistance.

Common Questions

Q: Will this affect my privacy? A: Using your device's real MAC address is less private, but only affects this specific WiFi network. All other networks will continue using randomized MAC addresses for privacy.

Q: Do I need to do this for all WiFi networks? A: No, only change this setting for networks where you're experiencing connection problems.

Q: Will I need to do this again? A: Yes, if you ever "forget" and reconnect to the network, you'll need to repeat these steps.
